s,r,l refers to the rise which is the length from the waist to the crotch.

Normally if you are a regular coat you are a regular rise.

For slacks you can choose up or down on the rise depending on your body type.

If you are shorter or longer torso.

Example - if you are normally a regular coat but your inseam is 29 or less you could choose a short rise.

Example - if you wear your slacks low,or they tend to be baggy you could choose a shorter rise.

Example - if you wear your slacks higher on your waist you could choose a longer rise.

Example - if your slack inseam is 34 but you are 5'8 you could choose the long rise.
